Establishment of the Ecological Regions-Based Water Quality Ecological Assessment System (Ecoregions) in Turkey
This project aims to establish an ecological assessment system based on ecological regions (ecoregions) for the evaluation of the ecological status of surface waters in Turkey. The project is a comprehensive technical assistance work financed by the European Union, with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change acting as the contracting authority. Within the project; the identification of ecological regions considering Turkey's hydrological, biological, and environmental characteristics, the assessment of biological, physico-chemical, and hydromorphological quality elements related to water bodies, the development of ecological classification systems based on these elements, and the creation of a nationally applicable ecological assessment methodology are targeted.
Within the scope of this project, the following services have been provided by our personnel:
Contribution to technical studies aimed at the development of ecological region (ecoregion) classifications that will serve as a basis for the ecological assessment of surface waters across Turkey,
Analysis of data sets regarding biological, physicochemical, and hydromorphological quality parameters of water bodies and the establishment of assessment methodologies,
Conducting technical analyses for the determination of indicators and reference conditions to be used for ecological status classification,
Examination of national and international legislation, the European Union Water Framework Directive, and compatibility with project outputs,
Contribution to the preparation of technical reports, methodological documents, and guide documents for the application of the ecological assessment system,
Provision of technical support for pilot applications, technical meetings, workshops, and stakeholder participation processes,
Preparation of technical reports related to project progress and ensuring coordination with the consortium leader,
Creation of technical recommendations for the applicability of the developed ecological assessment system at the national scale.
