Feasibility Study Project for Increasing the Capacity of Famagusta Wastewater Treatment Plant

This project was carried out to evaluate the current performance of the Famagusta Wastewater Treatment Plant, determine the treatment capacity needed in the future based on projected increases in population and flow rates, and identify the most suitable technical solution for a 15-year period. The study examined the operational status of the existing facility and the main transfer station, analyzed inflow rates, stormwater contributions, groundwater leakages, and anticipated wastewater generation amounts. Existing technologies and potential new facility alternatives were compared from technical, economic, and environmental perspectives; the optimal treatment solution was determined using a multi-criteria analysis approach. Additionally, financial sustainability was assessed by considering operating costs, investment requirements, and regional economic conditions, and a final feasibility/sustainability report was prepared.

The following services have been carried out by the personnel throughout the project:

  • On-site examination of the existing Famagusta Wastewater Treatment Plant and main pumping station, evaluation of the technical and economic lifespan of the equipment.

  • Collection, analysis of flow rates during dry and rainy periods, groundwater infiltration, rainwater entries, and existing operational data, and creation of wastewater generation projections until 2035.

  • Identification of the necessary technical requirements for the plant to operate at full capacity and without interruption; definition of improvement, expansion, or new facility options for the existing plant.

  • Development of a multi-criteria analysis model for different treatment technologies and plant configurations, evaluation of options based on time–cost–technical adequacy parameters.

  • Examination of past financial data obtained from local government, analysis of the operational revenue–expense structure, and preparation of financial projections for two different scenarios (own resources + credit/grant-supported investment).

  • Conducting a sustainability analysis in terms of service quality, environmental performance, operational efficiency, and institutional capacity, and determination of development goals.

  • Preparation of feasibility and sustainability reports by compiling all technical, economic, and environmental analyses; making presentations and conducting evaluation meetings with stakeholders.
